Alaska Climate Impact Project
Harnessing Alaska’s vast resources to benefit Alaskans and drive global climate solutions.
Alaska’s vast lands and waters are among the planet’s greatest carbon and climate assets. Through the Alaska Climate Impact Project, we are transforming these assets into climate solutions, jobs and economic opportunity for Alaska. We envision a future where Alaska’s resources and innovations are part of the global solutions for climate adaptation and carbon stewardship.
Gigatons of Opportunity
Alaska represents one of the planet’s most significant opportunities for climate action. With more than one-fifth of the nation’s landmass and over half its stored carbon, Alaska’s potential to influence global climate outcomes is measured in gigatons. Its consolidated lands management, historical energy economy and unique state policies offer rare levers for large-scale impact.
Through the Alaska Climate Impact Project, we are turning this potential into progress, developing policies, partnerships and pathways that harness Alaska’s natural and industrial assets for economic and ecological benefit in Alaska and local economic renewal. We are also situating Alaska’s vast resources in the global context and accelerating an Alaska economy and policies that empower us to thrive by restoring balance. By creating new financial and fiscal tools, seizing the opportunities of climate adaptation and testing bold models of landscape-scale stewardship, Alaska can lead the world towards a carbon-negative future–one rooted in innovation, resilience and respect for place.

Our Work
Alaska Climate Assets
By 2050, we believe Alaska can capture more carbon than it emits–through its lands, waters, and technologies–while thriving economically. We’re collaborating with scientists, policy experts and Alaska leaders to chart the technical, economic and policy pathways to a carbon-neutral future for our state.
A New Compact for Our Lands
Alaska’s vast public lands are central to national climate goals. We’re working with partners to craft forward looking policies and management frameworks that reflect Alaska’s unique landscapes, governance and opportunities for co-management and climate stewardship.
Wildfire and Permafrost Stewardship
Increasing wildfires across Alaska’s boreal and tundra regions are releasing globally significant stores of carbon and accelerating permafrost thaw. We’re partnering with researchers across the U.S. and Canada to explore tools that protect permafrost, reduce emissions and manage wildfire as part of a global climate solution. The Tongass Initiative
As the largest intact temperate rainforest on Earth, the Tongass stores immense amounts of carbon and sustains communities and rich biodiversity. We’re supporting efforts to ensure the forest is managed for climate stability, ecosystem health and local prosperity.
Advanced Energy and Infrastructure Innovation
Alaska’s vast clean energy–from wind, hydro, geothermal and tidal to emerging nuclear technologies–can strengthen local economies and energy security. We are working to accelerate the deployment of power generation, transmission and storage solutions that deliver affordable, reliable power to our communities while reimagining industrial infrastructure to capture and manage carbon for long term benefit.
