Chilkat Fund (Jilkáat Aani Ka Héeni Fund)
Uplifting Indigenous stewardship, community resilience and cultural continuity in the Chilkat Valley through place-based investment and strategic partnerships.
The Chilkat Fund is a place-based initiative rooted in the ancestral homelands of the Jilkáat Kwáan and Lkóot Kwáan in Southeast Alaska. Led by the Jilkáat Kwáan (people of the Chilkat) and community allies, the fund supports the protection of the Chilkat River Watershed (Jilkáat Aani Ka Héeni) and promotes sustainable futures for the region through Indigenous stewardship, civic engagement, advocacy, community education and conservation.
The Chilkat Fund reflects Alaska Venture Fund’s commitment to directing investment toward locally led, place-based transformation, where traditional ways of life, land stewardship and Tribal self-determination form the foundation for a thriving and sustainable future for people, lands, and waters.
Our Work: At the Crossroads of Culture and Conservation
The Jilkáat Aani Ka Héeni — the 2.6 million-acre Chilkat River Watershed — is both a vital ecosystem and the cultural heart of the Jilkáat Kwáan. This watershed supports all five species of Pacific salmon and hosts the world’s largest congregation of bald eagles. It lies within the Tongass National Forest, the largest intact temperate rainforest and one of the largest carbon sinks on Earth, making its protection a global ecological priority and a local imperative.
Rooted in the Tlingit values of Háa Áani (our land) and yáa at wooné (respect for all things), stewardship here means caring for the land as kin, with humility, reciprocity and vision for future generations.
We envision the Chilkat Valley as a vibrant, sovereign and sustainable home for generations to come, rooted in culture, kinship and connection to the land.
